I spent this afternoon watching the whole Apple keynote movie for iphone SKD launch. Apple has made a very smart move about allowing 3rd party software developers to develop cool native applications on iPhone and iPod. And the distribution is through Apple’s Application Store which will be available on the next iPhone software upgrade. Revenue wise, Apple takes 30% of each sale, the developer gets 70%, and if you are giving your apps away for free, Apple will cut their fees to NOTHING as well, very very smart.
On top of that, iPhone has also got a VC company to fund this movement, how often do you see VC firms puring 100millon dollars into a platform?
iFund™
KPCB’s iFund™ is a $100M investment initiative that will fund market-changing ideas and products that extend the revolutionary new iPhone and iPod touch platform. The iFund™ is agnostic to size and stage of investment and will invest in companies building applications, services and components. Focus areas include location based services, social networking, mCommerce (including advertising and payments), communication, and entertainment. The iFund™ will back innovators pursuing transformative, high-impact ideas with an eye towards building independent durable companies atop the iPhone / iPod touch platform.
This SKD release opens a LOT of opportunities, I was already convinced that I am going to develop something cool for iPhone and iPod in the near future.
