Wow, my first entry of this brand new blog.
After almost two years of mocking around on other design stuff, I decided to pick up Flash once again. But this time, I have to upgrade my knowledge from AS2 to AS3.
The first flash project is to display HD video in flash. It was not possible until the recent upgrade was available for flash player 9. Thanks for the wonderful work of Adobe Flash Development Team.
I just read an article on www.kaourantin.net – What just happened to video on the web?, the news was released last year but still, I am absolutely amazed how easy it is for people to insert HD videos in the future through Flash.
Some highlights are:
You can load and play .mp4,.m4v,.m4a,.mov and .3gp files using the same NetStream API you use to load FLV files now. We did not add any sort of new API in the Flash Player. All your existing video playback front ends will work as they are.
Video needs to be in H.264 format only.
Support all audio sampling rates from 8Khz to 96Khz.
Audio can be either AAC Main, AAC LC or SBR, corresponding to audio object types 0, 1 and 2. We also support the ‘.mp3′ sample type meaning tracks with mp3 audio.
Yes, yes and yes!!! I can add H.264 Quicktime files straight into Flash Player 9, and the sound quality can be awesome as well. This make my life a hell lot of easier. The only downside is the latest Flash Player is not spread well enough to cover the majority market, many need to download the latest flash player before they can see anything, a lot of people can not be asked to do that.
Anyway, here are my experiments of AS3 full browser flash H.264 Video Quality test:
I found the H.264 SD quality and even Low-Res H.264 looks good enough for a background video. Flv file with On2 VP6 encoding is not that great.
Once again, I am stoked.
